Planet 51

I didn’t get into the theatre in time to see all of the previews, but I did get to see the short film Live Music from Mass Animation.  It was a decent little short film and the animation was top notch.  Planet 51 is a film to go see with the whole family.  It has some great little homages throughout;  I counted about 12 in succession and about 25 that I was able to catch.  I liked this film because, while it is aimed at children, there is still plenty in the film for adults to enjoy.   3 kernels, so get poppin’.

Ninja Assassins

The previews before this film were:  Book of Eli (Looks good), Prince of Persia (Looks like it could be great), Avatar (Looks to be awesome), and Armored (Looks like it could be skipped).  The Movie Ninja Assassins appealed to me right off from the pretty and fast paced previews I’d seen.  I was somewhat prepared for the violence of this film having read a review or two before seeing it, but I must say there is a lot of blood (think Kill Bill and then maybe add a little).  The special effects are superb and the fight scenes are very well choreographed.  I wasn’t expecting much on story but that was surpisingly well written and kept my interest throughout.  I give this one 4 kernels for stunningly beautiful visuals, a great soundtrack and an interesting script.  Don’t take a date to this movie, go see this one with your buddies.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

3 Kernels

I watched a matinee showing of this movie and was one of three people in the theatre.  This movie has been out for a little while, but in case you have yet to see it, here is my review.  The previews for this film were:

The Crazies (Zombies ), Did you hear about the Morgans (Witness Relocation Comedy) , The Road(Post Apocalyptic Road Trip movie), and Brothers(Psychotic Soldier returns home).  I really liked this quirky little tale.  It’s an adaptation of the book by Jon Ronson about experiments that took place for Remote Viewing or Psychic combat.  I liked George Clooneys character, he’s pretty good at playing a crackpot after all.  I really enjoyed Ewan McGregor as the journalist who narrates the film.  Having chosen him for this film is more ironic considering what the men in this secret unit were called.  I recommend that you see this if you are looking for a good laugh and a good time.

Movie Reviews

I have recently decided I’m going to be watching a bunch more movies.  When I do I’ll be posting a review here.  Let me first say that I really love movies.  I generally like most movies, so unless the movie really stunk the place up I’m not going to be giving it a horrible review.  That said I will still be starting out the review with a short and to the point statement about whether or not this movie is worth your time.  When I go to the movies it is to enjoy myself and to escape for a short while.  I think this is how a lot of people feel, however in order to make themselves feel better they might nitpick and say that a particular film is trash when it is just not the case.  Stay tuned for more on this…

Droid Building 101

So I have recently begun progress on my R2-D2.  I’m not positive it’s going to be an R2, but it seems likely.  I don’t have any photos to share, but I will upload them when I do.  I’ve gotten the very rough cuts done and made my 4 round sections rounder.  Now that I’ve inhaled about a pint of sawdust I think I’m going to start using a dust mask.  ;)  With my allergies its probably bad not to.  Check back Monday or Tuesday for photos of my progress.

Playing Cards Cabinet

I recently purchased a display cabinet and I’ve been working on trying to figure out how to come up with little display stands to set my decks of playing cards on.  I have fashioned a few different items from foamboard and balsa wood and plexiglass.  I hope to be able to start creating a bunch of them soon so I can properly display the cards.  On a shelf that is 14″ deep it is kind of hard to get them all to stand up straight by themselves.  They have a tendency to want to fall backwards.

Royal Subjects

I had a pretty fun time at the Omaha Royals game last night. Even though the Albuquerque Isotopes won it was still an enjoyable experience.   It was good seeing E and N again.  I took some photos also and if they turn out pretty good they’ll likely end up on Flickr.
